HPMC (Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose) capsules have been developed for both pharmaceutical products and dietary supplements. HPMC is also being adopted as a film coating or a sustained-release tablet material in the pharmaceutical field. HPMC is used in various formulations as viscolizing agent, coating polymer, bioadhesive, in solid dispersion to enhance solubility, binder in the process of granulation and in modified release formulations. Notable use is in the production of capsule shells, replacing the animal derived gelatin in conventional two-piece capsules.
